Financial Controller

Children's Medical Research Institute (CMRI) is Australia's first dedicated paediatric research facility and now one of the nation's most highly regarded medical research institutes. Our research focuses on the areas of embryonic development and birth defects, cancer, neuroscience and gene therapy and we have a strong international reputation based on our research outcomes. CMRI's research programs are supported by state of the art facilities and committed research and support staff. The successful candidate for this position will report directly to Chief Financial Officer. Key responsibilities for the Financial Controller include oversight of all Financial Management, Reporting and Analysis, and financial processes, including compliance requirements being met. More specifically, responsibilities include management of grant funding agreements and payments, annual budgeting and updating of forecasts, directing preparation of accurate and timely financial reports (internal and external), cash flow management, administration of investment activities, financial systems management (e.g. general ledger, payables, payroll).and support for commercialisation activities. The position will manage a small finance team, be part of the Institute's management group and will represent the CFO and CMRI at various meetings, as required.

The successful candidate must demonstrate: -

Proven background of financial management in an operation of similar size and complexity, with comparable accounting transactions and business processes.
Strong financial skills in a GAAP reporting environment.
Strong management reporting experience, working in conjunction with other business management to facilitate good decision-making.
Demonstrated commercial acumen and operational experience, including familiarity with financial and information systems relevant to CMRI.
Familiarity with issues around grants, investments, public fundraising and philanthropic funding sources.
Strong interpersonal and influencing skills over internal and external partners, establishing personal credibility.
Leadership and development of a team, especially in a growth or change environment.
Evidence of ability to multi-task and manage up/down/across an organisation
Good analytical, presentation and decision-making skills.
Attention to details and deadlines, working necessary hours when required.
Customer service skills and focus.
Able to read, interpret and understand all forms of legal and regulatory arrangements in order to meet compliance requirements.
Evidence of ability to act in a senior financial role, representing the organisation at a Board level and with external stakeholders.
The successful candidate will be hold tertiary & professional qualifications (CA/CPA) in Accounting or similar. Applicants with experience in the following areas will be highly regarded: -

Health & Medical Research sector exposure, which may include University or Government roles.
Grant funding agreements, administration and reporting/acquittals.
Not-for-profit experience, compliance standards.
Commercial experience including being able to review contracts, business cases, sales/fundraising practices.
Understands rules and requirements for payroll processing. Experience using a payroll system, such as Chris21
